Portuguese-style Chilli Sauce Recipe

  • Author: Harry
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately ¾ cup (180 ml) sauce 1x

Description

This Portuguese-style chilli sauce is a vibrant, tangy condiment made with Italian chilli paste or sambal oelek, olive oil, garlic, ginger, and a touch of lemon juice. Perfect for adding a spicy kick to grilled meats, seafood, or sandwiches, this versatile sauce blends bold flavors with simple ingredients for an easy-to-make accompaniment.

Ingredients

Scale

Chilli Sauce Ingredients

  • ½ cup (125 g) chilli paste (Italian chilli paste or sambal oelek)
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) olive oil
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp freshly minced garlic
  • ½ tsp freshly minced ginger
  • ½ tsp caster (superfine) sugar
  • Sea salt flakes, to taste
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small bowl, mix together the chilli paste, olive oil, lemon juice, freshly minced garlic, freshly minced ginger, and caster sugar. Stir well until the mixture is thoroughly combined.
  2. Develop Flavors: Allow the sauce to sit for a few minutes at room temperature so the flavors can meld together, enhancing the taste profile.
  3. Serve or Store: Use the sauce immediately or transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Before serving from the fridge, bring it to room temperature to re-incorporate the olive oil, which may solidify when chilled.

Notes

  • Use good quality olive oil for the best flavor and texture.
  • If you prefer a milder sauce, reduce the amount of chilli paste used.
  • This sauce pairs wonderfully with grilled chicken, fish, or as a spicy addition to sandwiches and salads.
  • Store in the refrigerator in a sealed container and consume within 3 days for freshness.
  • Bring the sauce to room temperature before serving to ensure olive oil is fluid and the sauce is well blended.
