Description

A refreshing green salad tossed in a creamy and tangy sour cream and onion dressing, flavored with chives, garlic, and a hint of honey. This easy-to-make salad combines crisp lettuce with a smooth, flavorful dressing perfect for a light lunch or side dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Dressing Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons honey or agave nectar
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 garlic clove, finely grated or minced
  • Kosher salt (such as Diamond Crystal), to taste
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped chives, plus more for serving

Salad Ingredients

  • 10 loosely packed cups torn or chopped lettuce leaves, such as butter lettuce or romaine hearts (about 8 to 10 ounces, depending on the variety)

Instructions

  1. Make the dressing: In a large bowl, combine the sour cream, vinegar, onion powder, honey, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and a pinch each of kosher salt and freshly ground pepper. Whisk until the mixture is completely smooth. Stir in the chopped chives. (The dressing can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.)
  2. Dress the salad: Add the torn or chopped lettuce to the bowl with the dressing. Gently toss the lettuce until it is evenly coated with the dressing. Taste and adjust the seasoning by adding more salt or pepper as desired.
  3. Serve: Transfer the dressed salad to a serving bowl or plates. Sprinkle extra chopped chives on top and add a few more cracks of freshly ground pepper for garnish. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • The dressing can be prepared up to 3 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for convenience.
  • Sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar can be used interchangeably depending on your flavor preference.
  • For a vegan alternative, substitute sour cream with a plant-based sour cream and adjust Worcestershire sauce accordingly as some brands contain anchovies.
  • This salad is best served fresh to maintain the crispness of the lettuce.
