Garbage Bread Recipe

  • Author: Harry
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6-8 servings 1x

Description

Garbage Bread is a hearty and flavorful rolled pizza dough stuffed with a savory mixture of crispy bacon, seasoned ground beef, melted Velveeta cheese, and sharp cheddar jack cheese. Baked until golden brown and served with a tangy mayonnaise-ketchup dip, this comfort food is perfect for game day or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1/2 pound chopped bacon
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning (e.g., McCormick)
  • 12 ounces Velveeta, cubed
  • 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar jack cheese

Dough

  • 1 (13.8 ounce) thin crust pizza dough (e.g., Pillsbury)

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside to prepare for baking.
  2. Cook Bacon: In a large skillet over medium-low heat, cook the chopped bacon until it’s crisp. Once cooked, remove the bacon from the pan and set aside. Drain most of the bacon grease from the skillet to avoid excess fat in the finished dish.
  3. Cook Onions and Ground Beef: Turn the skillet heat to medium-high. Add the chopped onions and ground beef to the skillet, cooking until the onions are soft and the beef is fully cooked. Drain any excess liquid or grease from the pan to keep the filling from being too greasy.
  4. Combine Filling Ingredients: Reduce heat to low, then add the crisp bacon back into the skillet with the cooked beef and onions. Sprinkle in the steak seasoning and stir to combine. Add the cubed Velveeta cheese, stirring continuously until the cheese is completely melted and integrated into the meat mixture. Remove the pan from heat.
  5. Assemble the Garbage Bread: Roll out the pizza dough onto the prepared baking sheet into approximately a 15×10 inch rectangle. Spread the warm meat and cheese mixture evenly over the dough, leaving about a one-inch border around the edges free.
  6. Add Cheddar Jack Cheese: Sprinkle the grated cheddar jack cheese evenly over the meat mixture on the dough to add extra cheesy flavor and texture.
  7. Roll and Seal Dough: Starting with the long sides, carefully roll the pizza dough over the filling, forming a log shape. Pinch the edges firmly to seal the crust and prevent filling from leaking during baking.
  8. Bake the Bread: Place the rolled dough seam side down on the baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Cool and Slice: Remove from the oven and allow the Garbage Bread to cool for 5-10 minutes on the baking sheet. This resting period helps the filling set and makes slicing easier.
  10. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, salt, and pepper until smooth and well combined. This tangy dipping sauce perfectly complements the savory bread.
  11. Serve: Slice the Garbage Bread into portions and serve warm with the prepared sauce for dipping, if desired.

Notes

  • Drain excess grease thoroughly to avoid soggy dough and overly greasy filling.
  • For a spicier version, add crushed red pepper flakes or hot sauce to the meat mixture.
  • The steak seasoning can be substituted with a mixture of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.
  • Letting the bread cool before slicing helps keep the filling intact.
  • This recipe works well with pre-made pizza dough but can be made from scratch for a homemade touch.
