Description

This Brie, Apple, and Cranberry Grilled Cheese sandwich combines creamy brie cheese with sweet and tart flavors from honeycrisp apples and whole berry cranberry sauce, all layered between slices of hearty sourdough bread brushed with butter and Sauvignon Blanc. A perfect gourmet twist on a classic comfort food, ideal for a cozy lunch or an elegant appetizer paired with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Butter

  • 4 sturdy slices sourdough bread (avoid soft bread)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ⅓ cup Sauvignon Blanc (for brushing)

Filling

  • 8 ounces chilled brie, rind removed, cut into thin slices
  • 1 medium Honeycrisp apple, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup whole berry cranberry sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Butter one side of each of the four slices of sourdough bread evenly. Then, brush the unbuttered side of each slice lightly with Sauvignon Blanc to add a subtle fruity flavor and help achieve a golden crust.
  2. Assemble the Sandwiches: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place two slices of bread butter-side-down onto the skillet. On each, layer the thinly sliced brie, followed by the apples and a generous spoonful of cranberry sauce. Top each with the remaining slices of bread, butter-side-up. Cover the skillet with a lid to help the cheese melt thoroughly.
  3. Cook the Sandwiches: Reduce heat to medium and allow the sandwiches to toast. When the cheese begins melting, remove the lid and use a spatula to check the underside. Once the bottom is a golden brown, carefully flip each sandwich and toast the other side until equally golden and the cheese is melted.
  4. Serve: Remove the grilled cheese sandwiches from the skillet and serve immediately while warm and gooey. Pair with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc for a delightful meal experience.

Notes

  • Use sturdy sourdough bread to prevent sogginess and achieve a perfect crispy crust.
  • Removing the rind from the brie ensures a smoother texture in the sandwich, but it is optional if you prefer the rind.
  • Adjust the amount of cranberry sauce to taste for your preferred balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • Keeping the apple slices thin helps them warm through without losing their crispness.
  • Covering the skillet with a lid during cooking helps melt the brie thoroughly.
