Apple Dumplings Recipe

  • Author: Harry
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

These classic Apple Dumplings feature tender apples wrapped in a soft, buttery dough and baked in a sweet cinnamon brown sugar sauce. Perfect for a cozy dessert, they offer a delightful combination of warm fruit, rich flavors, and comforting textures. Serve them warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an irresistible treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (267 grams)
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup salted butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup 2% milk (4 ounces)

Filling

  • 6 apples (peeled and cored)

Sauce

  • 2 cups brown sugar (400 grams)
  • 2 cups water (16 ounces)
  • 1/4 cup salted butter (2 ounces)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Make the dough: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix in the softened butter, then add the milk and stir just until a soft dough forms. Divide the dough into six equal balls.
  2. Assemble the dumplings: Roll out each dough ball on a floured surface into a flat piece. Place one peeled and cored apple in the center of each dough piece, then fold the dough around the apple, pressing the seams to enclose it completely and form a ball.
  3. Prepare the baking pan: Lightly spray a 9×13 inch baking pan with cooking spray and place the dough-wrapped apples evenly spaced inside the pan. Preheat the oven to 350ºF (175ºC).
  4. Make the sauce: In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, combine brown sugar, water, butter, and ground cinnamon. Heat the mixture just until it begins to boil, stirring frequently to dissolve the sugar and blend the ingredients.
  5. Bake the dumplings: Pour the hot brown sugar sauce evenly over the dumplings in the pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the dough has turned golden brown. Optionally, baste the dumplings with the syrup several times during baking for extra flavor and moisture.
  6. Serve: Remove the dumplings from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious dessert experience.

Notes

  • Use baking apples like Granny Smith for a tart contrast or sweeter varieties if preferred.
  • The dough can be chilled briefly if too sticky to handle easily.
  • To add extra warmth, sprinkle a little nutmeg or allspice into the sauce.
  • Leftover dumplings can be refrigerated and gently reheated before serving.
  • Optionally, drizzle with caramel sauce or dust with powdered sugar for garnish.
